Ericsson CEO Bao Yikang announced the opening of 5G business

"We are no longer satisfied with the discussion on paper, but we must do it, because this is the topic that our carrier customers most want to explore."

Bao Yikang pointed out that operators need to focus on three basic areas to achieve success: operational efficiency - reducing unit gigabyte costs; digital experience - improving user experience, reducing costs; exploring 5G and IoT use cases, creating new sources of revenue .

“Customer feedback is the foundation of our focused strategy that we have implemented since last year and also guides us on how to better demonstrate our products and technologies at the show.”

After years of standard development and technology research and development, 5G is gradually moving towards the commercial stage. To date, Ericsson has signed a cooperation memorandum of understanding on 38 network tests with operators. More importantly, Ericsson has also signed several commercial contracts and will deliver products to customers by the end of the year.

5G will be built on multiple use cases. Bao Yikang stressed that the large-scale application of global 5G will first occur in enhanced mobile broadband use cases to meet the surge in data traffic and provide a better user experience. Data traffic is expected to grow at a CAGR of 40% from 2017 to 2023 – meaning that data traffic at each site will increase by more than eight times.

But enhanced mobile broadband not only focuses on speed and user experience, but also on network efficiency. A site that is compatible with 4G and 5G networks, the cost of transmitting mobile data is only one-tenth the cost of the current base 4G site.

Andy Penn, CEO of Telstra, also joined the board with Bao Yikang. He talked about the importance of becoming a 5G leader, highlighting the business opportunities created by 5G for the corporate business unit of Telstra, and the company hopes to always be the first to offer outstanding customers. The desire to experience.

Bao Yikang also reviewed the achievements of 4G's leading operators in terms of annual revenue growth and market share.

Bao Yikang said: "We still don't know which use cases will eventually become the most important use cases for 5G, but we know that forerunners often get sustainable advantages."

By preparing the network for 5G deployment, operators can choose the time to start providing 5G traffic services.

“Last year we broke the world record of network speed in the test, opened a 5G design center in Austin, Texas, and launched a new air interface product for Massive MIMO and network services, which made the development of 5G smoother. ."

Bao Yikang said: "And just this year, we have completed the construction of 5G platform, including 5G core network, wireless network and transmission network products, as well as OSS, BSS, network services and security products. We are wireless network. And 5G commercial software has been added to the core network, enabling operators to launch 5G services from the fourth quarter of 2018."
